Have you ever walked through the Forbidden City and come out on the other side feeling utterly bored? Your Aunt Hilda and Uncle Paul, who are visiting, look clueless, and your kids have been dragging their feet along continuously asking “Are we there yet?” This is now about to change! From now on you will all come to love it! Even your teenage kids! Beijing Postcards will take you on the ultimate tour of the purple Forbidden City from the magnificent Tiananmen Gate with Mao’s iconic portrait to the top of Coal Hill looking back down on the world’s largest palace so full of hidden stories that it would take a lifetime to know them all. Do you know why Chinese parents of new born children travel from far away regions to stand on the Tiananmen Gate? What was everyday life really like for an emperor, his empress, numerous concubines and thousands of eunuchs? Where are the toilets and kitchens? How did you become a eunuch and why did the younger eunuchs have an extra layer of leather on their buttocks? Why did the concubines of the Jiajing emperor try to strangle him? Was the Dragon Lady, Empress Dowager Cixi, really so evil? What was the real reason why the boy emperor Puyi became impotent? Stories of pretty tiny lily feet, stunning fragrant concubines and jealous empresses, lonely emperors and opium fumes, sneaky and corrupt eunuchs. All this and much much more all set in the most splendid piece of architecture set right in the middle of Beijing.

During the dynasties the Imperial palace existed only as an idea to most people. It was the root of power. A mysterious presence that balanced heaven and earth. Present yet concealed right in the middle of the Capital. Stories of the castrated eunuch servants , the beautiful concubines and not least the vast amount of treasure in the palace were told all around the empire, but surrounded by a more than 10 meter high wall, no commoner could freely take a glance at the Imperial residence in fact people did not even know what the emperor looked like. This was what earned the palace the name the Forbidden City. Today we can freely enter, hordes of people are everyday moving through the most sacred halls of Imperial China, but what is kept away from us, what we can not readily access is the mindset, the ideas so deeply rooted in the imperial architecture.

A Crash Course to the Forbidden City” is a humble attempt to unlock the meaning behind the chambers of the palace. In a condensed and hopefully entertaining way. We wish to give you a comprehensive history of the palace from it was built 600 years ago till the last boy-emperor finally left in 1924.

“Old Beijing”- People often talk about the city as if it once existed in a pure, untouched version. But in reality Beijing has always been a city shaped by waves of migrants.

It is difficult to find a better example of this than “Dashilar”, just southwest of the Qianmen Gate. For hundreds of years this area of Beijing was the ever-simmering melting pot of the capital. Dashilar was the place where people would first enter Beijing. Through hard labor, personal relations, money, skills or whatever they brought with them, newcomers would find their way into the urban society.

Beijing Arrivals is a combined Walk and Talk. We will start out in our hutong gallery with a brief introduction to Dashilar, then we will explore the different districts of the neighborhood and visit a couple of families that we have worked with in our ongoing Oral history project.

Where to start: Beijing Postcards Gallery Store, No. 97 Yangmeizhu Street, 杨梅竹斜街97号
